I know of period aprons used in the past, which were additionally filled with ash, because it absorbs and clumps the blood very well. Contrary to what you might think it washed easily in cold water and was quite practical in those times.

I grew up with a father born in the 70s and he was openly disgusted with his daughter’s and wife’s periods. He’s a misogynist in general but he didn’t mind making snide comments to me when I was in pain and just suffering. He got angry with me when he found underwear I had bled in and he told me that I was too old for that shit. As if you somehow become more adept at controlling your flow as you age?? I think it’s so embarrassing to me a grown man and be disgusted or weird out by periods. They are a normal part of life and those that experience them deserve to be respected and cared for when they need it. It’s definitely part of my healing journey as an adult to reconnect with my body and its cycles and break down that internalized hatred and revulsion.

Had to have a complete hysterectomy at the age of 25. I’d had my daughter 4 years earlier and with the endometriosis and all that comes with it, wanted no more kids. Best thing I’ve ever done to get rid of the curse that had plagued me since age 11. My mother told me nothing. All I knew was what the film for girls said when I was in 4 th grade. Worst part, mom told my stepdad right in front of me! So for the next 14 years it was shameful and embarrassing. Mom ruined what should have been a pleasant enough experience. I was completely up front with my own child. Always available for anything she wanted to talk about and then some. I wish my mom had done the same.

Have to add a comment: in many places in the world girls who go to school most days stay home if they have their periods--simply because of lack of supplies.

I try to find evidence that anyone in women's studies has studied the history of women's happiness. Honestly, this is about as close as we get to that, no matter what (ahem) period we examine. We have a sense now that women around the world are generally not happy now. Country by country, even those who are well off seem anxious and afraid of the future. Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Ukraine and Russia, and many other places that see a lot of armed conflict going on are full of unhappy women. In many well-off places, women feel unsupported in marriage and are reluctant to have children. City women feel special stress. Women who work in agriculture are more likely to see their children going to work young, without much education. They themselves are more likely to be illiterate. Illiterate women seldom get to tell their stories, but almost everyone is too busy anyway--today. What was it like in this Biblical era where a menstruating woman was considered unclean and asked to basically live apart for awhile? Could it have been like a vacation in effect, or was it more likely to be a time of sadness, stress, and alienation? If a woman is trying to conceive, a period coming has always been a crushing blow. If she is hoping not to, it's good news. What do you think about studying women's happiness history? I'm grateful you have little reason today to fear having a child. Have a happy baby!

Fun fact: I'm 69. My Mom had 4 children. She refused to allow me to use tampons. Because she didn't understand that a woman's vagina is a "closed system". She thought tampons could somehow get lost in your abdomen beyond your ability to retrieve them.

  • @motherhenable

Bathing myth surprising since many devices used with flowers or spices carried to increase the scent around the body. June weddings popular since full baths were in May. I did think once a year was incredible since wash bowls available and could be used for sponge baths often.

As a freshman at university the very first quarter, I called my mother often-frequently 2 X a week. One day she told me to check on my "supplies" because she could tell I would need them shortly--I had awful PMS & she could tell it would be arriving shortly. During this quarter, I finally got my first real boyfriend, & he called about 30 minutes later as I realized I was out and it was starting. I tried to get him off the phone asap with increasing hysteria. His response? What's wrong? Are you bleeding? What, does everyone know? Yes, & I need to go...He asked, "Make & model? I have a pen." He offered to go down and get tampons for me, like it was no big deal, he had sisters. As promised, he turned up 10 minutes later with tampons and Tylenol. That was 1976. Why have we gone backwards?

I' dunno, the more things change the more they stay the same. The Jacobites are equivalent to mega-companies quarrelling over smaller fry and gobbling each other up. I don't think the average farmer's wife gave a hooey who was King or Queen until it came to paying for them to stay in outrageous comfort and privilege. Those royals thought they were put on Earth by God Himself (this is in 17th-18th century Christian terms) to rule over "Their" people. The difference in religion to me is farcical. As Queen Elizabeth I is quoted as saying, "I do not mean to make a window into men's souls. Good God above, there is but one Jesus Christ." I would put it in modern terms: there is but one greater good however you observe it. The worst, bloodiest, most savage wars have been wars for religious reasons. That of itself speaks volumes.🕍🌄👑

My mother never told me or explained to me about what I should expect. 😢 I learned about girls having periods at high school by my peers... I was shocked and felt it was a shame I never wanted a period.... So at 16 I hid my in frequent periods from my mother... I had painful lower pain below my belly button... and told nothing to my Mum. Mind you I am one of 7 kids. I was fortunate to have one baby After the birth I had endometriosis . That rendered me infertile... after 4 yrs back to back I V F the Lovely last was inconclusive.... I am so lucky that now I have 4 granddaughters given to me by my only child.... I am grateful and humble... I just wish my Mum was able to discuss with me about " that it's normal , a girl thing a really good thing for a girl to have her periods " .. thanks for your post x

I am in my 70s. In my new menstruation days I was advised not to bathe or wash my hair as I would catch a cold.... However, i must say that sanitary belts and pads with the loops felt much more secure and protected than the more recent sticky pads especially if your loss was a heavy one. So glad my period days are over.
